Kentish Culture Past and Present is a twelve-month
project enabled by a £44,300 Heritage Lottery Fund
grant. The aim is to develop a series of educational
resources including a website, radio station, film and
literature about the histories of various communities
in Kent. The central activity of the project is the
renovation of a century old Romany wagon, or vardo.
This is being undertaken in close collaboration
with The Romany Life Centre in Cranbrook, with
the addition of hand-carved wood panels by Martin
Brockman depicting Kentish culture and folklore.
The project involves a wide range of practitioners
including musicians, performers, filmmakers and
craftspeople, and is headed by Richard Robinson,
Creative Director at The Canterbury High School.
In focusing on shared cultural heritages it aims
to engage with and provide creative learning
opportunities for a diverse audience of all ages in
East Kent and beyond.
